Celebrating Valentine's Day in the ELA classroom can be tricky, but I've compiled a group of standards-based activities that still emphasize the day of love. My students always enjoy these throughout the month of February. When you purchase this product, you'll receive my FAVORITE Valentine's Day activities to use in the secondary ELA classroom.
1. Valentine's Activities that include:
This bundle contains fun Valentine's Day Activities that also help students review material taught in the secondary English classroom. My students love these activities and it's a great way to incorporate the holiday into your lesson plans. These are short activities that could also easily be used for extra credit.
Included:
- Short story + highlighting scavenger hunt
- "Craftivity" with story - chocolate box full of literary elements from story
- 10 different Bingo cards with Valentine Literary devices
- Character dating profile that can be used with ANY story or novel
- "Roll and Write" activity where students roll a foldable dice to create a literary Valentine for someone special.
2. Valentine's Day Themed Writing Prompts (20 to use throughout the month!)
I love LOVE! The month of February is a great time to have students reflect on love - whether it be romantic relationships, or just the love of friends and family. I've created 20 Valentine's Day themed writing activities that are great for pushing students to journal reflectively. The best part is, these love prompts won't make the boys cringe! I've created a variety of activities from illustrating symbolic tattoos, to responding to literary quotes about love. There are even a few creative writing activities and a Taylor Swift song that will make your students think critically and utilize literary elements. Check out the product preview for an overview!
3. Valentine's Day Stations
I love to use this station rotation activity during the month of February. All you need to do is add crayons or markers!
I use this station rotation activity with my high school students, but it could also be used for upper-level middle schoolers!

4. Valentine Themed Reading Comprehension Passage with Questions
•I love to celebrate holidays in the secondary classroom but still “stick” with the ELA standards. I use this article around Valentine’s Day to teach my students about the history of the holiday, objections to celebrating it, AND how we can spread love year around – not just on one day out of the whole year. This piece works well when you’re focusing on author’s argument, tone, text structure, and/or main idea.
This could also be used as a sub-plan. Everything students need for vocabulary, critical thinking, and test prep are all included!
I've included an article all about the history of Valentine's Day and many believe it is simply a "Hallmark Holiday" used to make money. I've also added some fun stories on the history of a popular Valentine's Day candy. Students will see 10 multiple choice questions and one constructed-response question. I've also added a vocabulary practice and 5 pre-reading questions to get your students thinking about the text as well as their own lives. If you'd prefer a digital version of the text + a self-grading quiz, I've also added that to the packet with the instructions on how to implement Google Quizzes in your classroom.
