Product Info

Social-Emotional Learning is often overlooked in the secondary classroom. However, character education is so important to teach explicitly in these settings. This bundle can be used in middle school or high school in order to teach students about self-respect, gratitude, and resilience.

When you purchase this product, you'll receive:

1. Overcoming Challenges and Building Resilience | Social-Emotional Learning
Social-emotional learning is a crucial component of teaching our students. Sometimes, we have to explicitly teach our students how to overcome hardships and build resiliency. This packet on resiliency not only teaches students what it means to be resilient, but it also pushes them to develop language skills, reading comprehension, and reflective writing.

When you purchase this product you'll receive:

- A pre-reading sheet that covers vocabulary building and accesses prior knowledge

- An article on what resilience is and how we can build it within ourselves

- Real-world scenarios where students must read, think, and decide what a resilient reaction would be

- 3 Writing prompts that push students to think reflectively and utilize textual evidence

- 2 additional high-interest articles on celebrities who are role models of resilience (Shaquem Griffin and Rachel Hollis)

- Reflective reading guides for both role models of resilience articles

- Full answer keys/suggestions

- Instructions for how I use this product in my own classroom

2. Reading Comprehension Passage and Questions on Gratitude

I love to engage my students with a reading that is a perfect fit for the Thanksgiving season OR a Social Emotional Learning Lesson. I’ve used this piece during the fall season to add a high-interest piece, but also practice the standards and skills that are required. This piece works especially well with teaching or testing the author's purpose, main idea, and author's argument.

This could also be used as a sub-plan. Everything students need for vocabulary, critical thinking, and test prep are all included!

I've included an article all about gratitude and how it has been scientifically proven to lessen depression. Students will see 10 multiple choice questions and one constructed-response question. I've also added a vocabulary practice and 5 pre-reading questions to get your students thinking about the text as well as their own lives. If you'd prefer a digital version of the text + a self-grading quiz, I've also added that to the packet with the instructions on how to implement Google Quizzes in your classroom.

Multiple Choice Questions + Constructed Response Cover the following topics:

I love to have my students focus on how gratitude can positively affect their lives. I print or digitally share this gratitude journal with them throughout the month of November OR when I'm teaching a social-emotional learning unit on gratitude. This piece shifts their focus from negativity in order to focus on all of the things that they have to be thankful for - even the things we typically take for granted!

I've included a digital version that you can use with your students via Google Slides!

When you purchase this product you'll receive:

4. Social-Emotional Learning | Self Respect Character Education
Social-emotional learning is a crucial component of teaching our students. Sometimes, we have to explicitly teach our students how to respect themselves in order to be respected by others. This is a skill that many secondary students aren't explicitly taught, but it's more important than ever with various temptations and social media. This packet on self-respect not only teaches students what it means to respect yourself, but it also pushes them to develop coping skills, discuss ideas with others, and engage in reflective writing that grows their own sense of self-respect.

When you purchase this product you'll receive:

- An article on what self-respect is and how it is different from self-esteem

- Ways to cultivate self-respect within ourselves
