2. The Consequences of Being Illiterate

I love to have my students think about the importance of being literate and the consequences of struggling to read well. I typically work this lesson in at the beginning of the semester, but it’s something that could be used at any point and with any unit. 3. Forming New Habits

The spring season is a great time to talk about goal setting and creating new, productive habits with our students. Sometimes, students need that final "push" to stay on track and make it through the semester before spring break arrives. This reading passage will give students a brief overview into what a habit is, how habits are formed in our brains, and why they're so darn hard to quit OR start! This informational text lesson on Marijuana and the dangers of adolescents using marijuana is the perfect ready-to-go lesson to practice critical reasoning, standards-based questioning, and writing while using textual evidence. Students will be engaged with the Hot Topic that is currently a major issue nationwide debate.

Students will be presented with terminology to define and a detailed set of critical thinking questions to consider before reading.
